Utah Man Allegedly Destroys Apartment Complex After Throwing Molotov Cocktail Through Window, is Wanted by Police

Police are hunting a suspect who started a fire by throwing a Molotov cocktail through a window, destroying an apartment complex in Utah.

Fire crews responded to a blaze at the Overlook Point Apartments in West Valley City shortly before 8.30 p.m. MST on Saturday, the West Valley City Fire Department said on Twitter.

The conflagration occurred after a domestic dispute between a man and woman who both lived in the apartment complex, KUTV reported. The man threw something into the window of an apartment and a fire quickly ignited inside the unit, the witnesses said.

No arrests have been made but the suspect's identity is known to authorities and police are working to find him, according to the fire department. No further details were immediately released.

Authorities evacuated all residents from the eight-unit complex as fire crews worked to extinguish the flames. The fire department said no one was injured in the fire, but three people were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, according to Fox13.

The building was "destroyed" in the fire and is no longer habitable, the fire department added.

"Witnesses reported a man & woman arguing prior to fire. Said they saw man throw something through window of apartment, immediately followed by flames. All units evacuated. No injuries. Building destroyed," the fire department tweeted.

West Valley City Fire Department Deputy Chief Chris Beichner said the fire started in a unit on the second floor and completely gutted two apartments, ABC4 reported. He said fire crews took 45 minutes to put out the fire, but all eight units in the complex sustained fire damage and are no longer habitable, according to the station.

In an update on Twitter, the fire department said investigators are working on determining the cause of the fire and that Red Cross Utah/Nevada was providing help to residents whose homes had been destroyed.

Red Cross Utah/Nevada said on Twitter that the fire had left 24 people displaced. The organization added that it had provided assistance to seven adults and four children.

The West Valley City Fire Department and the West Valley City Police Department have been contacted for comment.
