Police said memorials to the fallen officer can be placed at the police department's headquarters at the corner of Cabarrus Avenue and Spring Street.

Police also urged people to avoid the area as they continue to investigate.

The shooting comes days after a 25-year-old police officer was killed in the line of duty in Mount Holly, located around 30 miles from Concord.

Tyler Herndon, an officer with the Mount Holly Police Department, was shot by a suspect while responding to a break-in at a car wash and arcade in the early hours of Friday morning.

Herndon later died in hospital, just two days before his 26th birthday.

Officers from law enforcement agencies across North Carolina showed up to pay their respects at Herndon's funeral in his hometown of Kings Mountain on Tuesday, according to local media reports.

Herndon was a 2017 graduate of UNC Charlotte, where he majored in Criminal Justice, his obituary on Harris Funeral Home's website said. "Tyler always wanted to be in law enforcement and loved his job," it added.

A grand jury indicted Joshua Tyler Funk, 24, in Herndon's killing on Monday, The Charlotte Observer reported.
