Who is JaShyah Moore? Teen Missing for Three Weeks After Vanishing in New Jersey

New Jersey and federal authorities are searching for a 14-year-old girl, JaShyah Moore of East Orange, who was last seen at a deli in the city on October 14.

At around 10 a.m. that day, the teenager went to Poppies Deli on 520 Central Avenue to pick up items for her family, the City of East Orange said in a release issued on Wednesday.

"JaShyah Moore is still missing and we are asking everyone to please be aware, keep sharing and report anything suspicious to [the East Orange Police Department] at 973 266 5041, 973 266 5030, or 973 266 5060," the release said.

JaShyah is described by the authorities as 5 ft 5 in tall and about 135 pounds. She was last seen wearing khaki pants, a black jacket and black boots.

East Orange Police, the New Jersey State Police and the FBI are working in collaboration to search for the girl. Further details regarding her disappearance have not been released.

Newsweek has contacted New Jersey State Police for comment.

The teenager's mother, Jamie Moore, told local TV station PIX11 News that her daughter had come home from the deli and said she had lost the EBT card used to pay for the groceries.

"She came back and she said, 'Mommy, I lost the card,'" Jamie Moore said. She told her daughter to "backtrack [her] steps" to find it.

An hour later, JaShyah had still not returned. Her mother went out to look for her, going to several delis in the area. She then reported JaShyah missing to a nearby police officer.

"She's such a smart girl. She would not stay out overnight," Jamie Moore said. "I know my daughter. She would not want me to worry."

She described JaShyah as a gamer who enjoyed PlayStation and the social gaming platform Rec Room.

Jamie Moore said the police had searched her house on October 14, taking her phone, as well as her daughter's video games and personal papers. She added that the teenager did not have her own cellphone.

New Jersey authorities say they have secured surveillance footage from Poppies Deli and U.S. Food Market, another store the teenager visited before she vanished.

Jamie Moore also told PIX11 News that her daughter had been summoned to testify in a domestic violence assault case allegedly involving her estranged stepfather, who is an East Orange Police officer.

However, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office told PIX11 News on October 28 it did not believe this case was connected to the teenager's disappearance.
