Polite Waiters? Sacrebleu!

Is the economic situation in Paris so dire that shopkeepers are willing to grit their teeth and pretend they like American tourists? If the local Chamber of Commerce has its way, the notoriously unfriendly Parisians will be transformed into shiny, happy waiters and cabdrivers. Backed by companies that directly depend on tourists, the chamber hopes to bring about the long-awaited attitude adjustment by distributing audio cassettes, posters and bumper stickers. The campaign--taking a page from "Fantasy Island's" Mr. Roarke--stresses, above all, that those serving foreigners remember to "smile, everyone, smile."
