'Pose' Star Mj Rodriguez Adds Musical Theater to Her Resume, Will Appear in 'Little Shop of Horrors'

Pose star Mj Rodriguez is adding Broadway musicals to her impressive resume. She will star in the Howard Ashman and Alan Menken Broadway musical Little Shop of Horrors when it comes to the Pasadena Playhouse in Los Angeles starting in late-September.

Rodriguez will play Audrey in the musical about a plant shop worker who encounters a meat-loving plant with an insane appetite. The revival will also star George Salazar as Seymour — Salazar is best known for the Broadway musical Be More Chill — and Glee's Amber Riley as the killer plant Audrey II.

Rodriguez isn't the first Pose cast member to star in Little Shop of Horrors. Her co-star Billy Porter played Audrey II (the plant) in the 2003 Broadway revival of the musical.

"Our new electrifying production of Little Shop of Horrors will give our audiences the opportunity to see a show they know and love in a way they never have before," the Pasadena Playhouse artistic director Danny Feldman told the Hollywood Reporter Wednesday. "From a delicious new take on everyone's favorite singing plant to the stunningly talented cast, this is sure to be a landmark theatrical event for Los Angeles."

What makes this production of the musical so unique is its diverse casting — it features mostly people of color and queer talent — and also the retelling of the story.

The director, Mike Donahue, told the Hollywood Reporter he hopes to highlight themes in the story that are relevant for modern audiences.

"It is a thrill for me to delve deeply into this rich material with this spectacular, electric cast," Donahue said. "I look forward to not only paying homage to this musical theater classic, but also exploring the themes that are still so much a part of our world today. More than anything, I look forward to Playhouse audiences having the time of their lives, and hearing our Little Shop with fresh ears, in a way they never have before."

The news of the Southern California production came shortly after it was announced a new Off-Broadway production of the musical is coming September 17 in New York. That production will star Jonathan Groff, Tammy Blanchard and Christian Borle.

The original Little Shop of Horrors premiered in 1982 as an Off-Off-Broadway production and instantly became a fan favorite. It has since been performed internationally, with productions mounted on Broadway and London's West End.

It was adapted into a feature film in 1986 starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene and Steve Martin.

The Pasadena Playhouse production will run from September 17 and run until October 20.
