'Power Book II Ghost' Release Date, Trailer, Cast, Plot: What We Learned From the New Promo

Power may have ended, but Starz is continuing the world of the show straight away with Power Book II: Ghost, its first of four spin-offs. In mid-February, the network released the first trailer for the show that finally revealed which Power cast members will be joining Mary J. Blige and Cliff "Method Man" Smith in the spin-off. The promo also gave the first official news we have had about the show's release date.

When is Power Book II: Ghost coming out on Starz?

The promo confirms a summer release date for the show. The sequel was rumoured to be coming in June 2020, and their upcoming roster of series may suggest this is correct. Ghost was confirmed by executive producer Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson to be airing in the same time slot as Power (Sundays at 8 p.m. ET), a slot which is occupied by Outlander Season 5 until May 3.

If Book II is coming in summer, this seems to suggest that Starz will air another show in the slot in between Outlander and the Power spin-off. Vida Season 3 seems the most likely option as that show has aired on Sundays in May in each of its two seasons so far. If Season 3 follows the example of Vida Season 2, Starz will air two of its 10 episodes every Sunday from May 10 until June 7, with Power Book II: Ghost starting on June 14.

Who is in the cast of Power Book II: Ghost?

Alongside already confirmed characters Davis Maclean (Smith) and Monet (Blige), the Power Book II promo revealed which three characters from Power would be leading the cast of the spin-off. As hinted in the Power series finale, Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) and Tasha (Naturi Naughton) will both be back. More surprisingly, however, also returning is Cooper Saxe (Shane Johnson), returning to his role in the district attorney's office after the events of the last episode of Power.

Though she does not appear in the trailer, Entertainment Weekly has also confirmed that LaToya Tonodeo of The Oath will also appear in Ghost as Monet's daughter Diana.

What will happen in Power Book II: Ghost?

The official Starz synopsis for the sequel reads: "Power Book II: Ghost will pick up the narrative just days after the Power finale. The sequel then follows Tariq navigating his new life, in which his desire to shed his father's legacy comes up against the mounting pressure to save his family."

Though the promo does not include much in the way of plot details, the presence of certain characters does give us some big hint as to what we can expect from the show.

For example, Tasha is still seen in prison, suggesting that the show will continue to explore the end of Power, when Tariq killed his father and Tasha went to prison for the crime.

Saxe's inclusion in the cast is also telling, though it is not known whether he will continue to be obsessed with Ghost or whether the new series will see him investigating Monet's criminal empire.

Power Book II: Ghost is coming soon to Starz.
