Powerball drawing days

The Powerball lottery draws take place every Wednesday and Saturday at 10.59 p.m. The deadline for purchasing a ticket varies by jurisdiction but is typically between an hour and two hours before the drawing.

As nobody won the jackpot on Wednesday night, the jackpot for Saturday is an estimated $60 million with a cash option of $42.9 million.

How to play the Powerball lottery

To play the Powerball lottery, players must purchase a ticket for $2 per play from a licensed retailer in 45 states, Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. The only states in which players cannot purchase a ticket are Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah.

Players must choose five numbers between one and 69 for the white balls and one number between one and 26 for the red ball. Players can choose the numbers on a play slip or can have the lottery terminal randomly select numbers.

There is also the option of adding a Power Play to the ticket for an additional $1 per play. The Power Play will multiply prizes—except for the jackpot and the match five—by the number of the Power Play. If a player wins the match five using the Power Play, the prize will be doubled to X2, regardless of the Power Play number.

The Power Play could be 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 and the X10 is only in play when the advertised jackpot is less than $150 million.

What happens when you win the lottery?

When a player wins a prize in the Powerball lottery, they must claim the prize within the jurisdiction in which they purchased their ticket. Prizes under $600 can be claimed at any licensed lottery retailer and prizes of more than $600 must be claimed at lottery offices and lottery headquarters.

Jackpot winners have the option of claiming their prize as an annuity which is made up of an initial payment followed by 29 annual graduated payments, or as a cash option which is of a lesser value but is paid out in one payment.
