Quibi: What is the New Streaming Service, How to Watch For Free and Subscribe

If this period of shelter-at-home has meant you are done with Disney Plus and have watched nearly all of Netflix, you will be pleased to know another streaming service full of new content has launched. Quibi has launched now in the U.S. and Canada, and offers what it calls "movie-quality shows designed for your phone." These include shows starring Sophie Turner, Chrissy Teigen and Chance the Rapper, all of which you can watch for free for up to three months.

What is Quibi?

According to its own website: "Got a few minutes? That's all you need to be entertained, informed and inspired. Launching this April, Quibi will present fresh content from today's top talent—one quick bite at a time. Get ready to make any moment extraordinary with incredible storytelling delivered right to your phone. From daily essentials to breakout shows, the next chapter will always be waiting."

The streaming service has two fairly unique features that it is hoping to draw customers in with. Each of its shows and "movies in chapters" have instalments that are 10 minutes or less. Though Netflix has experimented with short episodes on shows like Special and Bonding, Quibi is the first platform that specialises in this short-form content.

The second USP for the app is that each show is optimised for mobile viewing. Each show and movie on the streaming service has been filmed in both portrait and landscape, and viewers are able to move from one view to another while watching.

How to subscribe

As fits its mobile-ready content, Quibi is currently only available as an app. The streaming service is available now on the Apple App Store and Google Play. After downloading, viewers are able to fill in their details to see what the new streamer has to offer.

How much does Quibi cost

Currently, the service has two subscription levels. Users can either pay $4.99 a month to watch with ads or $7.99 to watch without commercials. However, there are two ways that users can watch Quibi for free either for three months or even a whole year.

How to watch Quibi for free

Anyone who signs up at Quibi.com before the end of April will get a 90-day free trial, which should (hopefully) mean free TV and film for the entirety of the shelter-at-home period.

T-Mobile subscribers, meanwhile, are able to get an entire year of Quibi for free by signing up at mytmobile.com or through the T-Mobile app. Customers with the following plans are able to get 365 days of free Quibi (per The Verge):

  • Customers with two or more voice lines of Magenta and ONE plans;
  • Users with First Responder, Magenta Plus 55 and Military plans; and
  • Small businesses with up to 12 lines.

T-Mobile customers who already get free Netflix as part of their package can take advantage of the offer, but will have to choose which service they want after a year.
