Rachel Maddow Warns 'That Time Is Past' For Public to Push Back Against Trump Purges

President Donald Trump's purge of dissenters is evidence that the 'dark days' of American democracy have arrived, according to MSNBC host Rachel Maddow.

In her Friday show, the journalist said American citizens must push back against an emboldened Trump, who has embarked on a revenge campaign against those who have stood against him, whether during the impeachment process or at any time during his presidency.

The Washington Post reported Friday that the president has ordered aides to identify any official suspected of disloyalty. The effort is reportedly led by Johnny McEntee, Trump's former personal aide, who is searching federal agencies to discover political appointees deemed insufficiently loyal.

"You can't even fall under suspicion of seeming like the kind of person who might criticize the president," Maddow said. "That's enough to get you fired even if you didn't actually criticize him."

She pointed to acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire's dismissal, which came after he briefed lawmakers that Russia is meddling in the 2020 election to help him win a second term. Trump was furious at Maguire's briefing, NBC News reported, and decided to force Maguire out.

"The director of national intelligence was just fired because... someone in his office warned Congress," Maddow said.

Trump appears unfazed by the House impeachment, interpreting his acquittal by the Senate as a "full exoneration." The GOP fell fully behind his administration, gearing up to defend the presidency and the Senate against energized Democratic challengers for the upcoming November presidential election.

Maddow suggested it is now time for citizens to make their voices heard and stand against the "very dark turns that this country has taken very quickly."

"This is not a warning. The dark days are not coming. The dark days are here," Maddow said. "It is too late, she added, to simply sound the alarm and "articulate what's wrong with the direction our country is taking and to warn people about where it's heading."

"That time is past," she warned. "These guys are not sneaking around trying to get away with stuff, and the heroism is catching them and telling people what they're doing."

"They are proclaiming openly that the rules are gone, they will do what they want, the government will be turned against you if you stand against this president. That is not a warning. That is where we are. And so what do we do?"
