'RAGE 2' Gameplay Trailer Highlights Fast Shooting, Driving Action

Bethesda confirmed the existence of RAGE 2 yesterday, and today we have the debut of gameplay footage. The new trailer, which can be watched above, shows the series' combination of brutal first-person action and vehicular mayhem.

According to a post on the Bethesda website, players control Walker, the last Ranger of Vineland. Walker must face off against a number of different factions to take down the evil Authority (and its leader, General Cross) in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. There are also dangerous mutants to watch out for, and some of the ones in the trailer look massive and scary.

RAGE 2 is co-developed by id Software and Avalanche Studios, which really shows in the gameplay trailer. The first-person combat feels similar to 2016's DOOM, mixed with some added magical elements. The driving seems like it will be similar to Avalanche Studios' Mad Max, an underrated open-world game from 2015.

In case you were wondering what those magic skills are, Bethesda explained they are special Nanotrite abilities, made possible by Walker's Arkist blood. While this ability gives Walker a huge advantage in combat, it also makes him a target of the Authority. This explains why Walker is the last Ranger around: all the others have been hunted down and killed.

The Nanotrite abilities can be used as attacks or to boost other abilities. One such example is called Overdrive. Once Walker taps into this mode, his weapons deal more damage, enemies drop better loot and his health even regenerates. Other Nanotrite abilities include a "Force push" type of attack and a move allowing you to crush enemies from above with a slamming blow.

We expect more RAGE 2 information at Bethesda's E3 showcase on Sunday, June 10. The showcase can be streamed on the Bethesda website, Twitch, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube starting at 9:30 p.m. EDT.
