Rare Scent

WE ALL KNOW WEARING A leopard coat is an environmental no-no. But Chanel No. 5? The French green group Robin des Bois (Robin Hood) last week charged that the perfume, created in 1922, contains the essence of the pau rosa, a rare tree from the Brazilian rain forest listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Robin Hood is calling on Chanel to switch to a synthetic version of the oil by the end of '97 or face an international boycott. ""We aren't against the use of precious woods,'' said a Robin Hood spokeswoman. ""But the use of wood on the verge of extinction when a synthetic is available is inexcusable.'' Chanel had no comment.
