The Boston Red Sox are one of the better teams in the American League, but they're fighting an uphill battle to improve over the course of the offseason.
The Red Sox are set to lose third baseman Alex Bregman in free agency. Bregman was one of the best players on the team last year, so he needs to be a priority in free agency. Boston can't improve the team before it re-signs or replaces Bregman.
Bailey Bassett of ClutchPoints recently projected Bregman would sign a massive five-year, $150 million deal and listed the Red Sox as the best fit.

"Speaking of Devers, his replacement was supposed to be Alex Bregman," Bassett wrote. "The Boston Red Sox can't afford to lose both third basemen in less than a year, so they need to do whatever it takes to bring Bregman back. He is a clear defense upgrade at third base compared to Devers, and he has hit 20-plus home runs in four of the last five seasons.
"The Red Sox have internal depth and a potential replacement for Bregman in Marcelo Mayer, but losing Bregman would be a really bad look after trading Devers. Boston should deploy Bregman at third and Mayer at shortstop or second base long-term."
Bregman is likely favored to head back to Boston this year, and it makes plenty of sense.
The Red Sox have the money to make a big deal like this. To make matters better for Boston, it could sign Bregman to a deal like this while also having enough money to chase a deal with Pete Alonso or a top pitcher.
