The family of Renee Nicole Good, the woman who was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis, has spoken out following her death.
Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, confirmed her daughter’s identity to The Minneapolis Star-Tribune. She said that her daughter was “an amazing human being.” Video footage shows a woman who identified herself as Good’s wife at the scene, in a state of distress, crying.
The Context
Good, a 37-year-old mother of one, was killed in her vehicle by an ICE officer during an interaction with an agent. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday morning in a residential neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis, was captured on video from multiple angles and shared on social media.

Video footage shows an officer approaching an SUV driven by Good stopped across the roadway, demanding that she open the door, and pulling on the handle.
The Trump administration has said that Good’s actions put the ICE officer’s life in danger. They said that she drove towards him and justified this use of lethal force. This characterization has been disputed by Democrats, who have said that the killing was senseless and unjustified.
The SUV was one of a number of vehicles parked in the middle of the road as ICE attempted to try to move through them, videos show. When the SUV begins to move forward, an ICE officer, standing in front of the vehicle, draws his weapon and fires at least two shots at close range, jumping back as the vehicle advances. The SUV then slammed into two parked cars before it came to a stop.
Good’s death has led to protests in Minneapolis, as the city once again becomes the center of national outrage. Her death occurred mere miles away from where George Floyd was murdered by police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020.
What To Know
Speaking to The Minnesota Star-Tribune, Ganger said: “Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”

Video footage shows the woman, who identified herself as Good’s wife, sobbing and saying, “They just shot my wife.”
She appears to say in the video, “They shot her in the head. I have a 6-year-old in school.”

In the social media footage, she says that she is Good’s wife but does not identify herself beyond this.
An eyewitness, who previously spoke to Newsweek on the condition of anonymity, said that "They just shot her in the head, she crashed, and then a lady came into the yard, and she was crying in the snow.”
The shooting has sparked outrage and condemnation from Democrats, while the Trump administration has defended ICE in the aftermath.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the fatal shooting on Wednesday was the result of an "act of domestic terrorism." Later that day at a press conference, she said that any death is a tragedy but defended the ICE officer’s actions as justified.
What People Are Saying
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, at a press conference: "If you're angry, I get it. I am too. If you're feeling that kind of despair, it's understandable. Let's show them who we can be. Let's show up with peace to march to protest, to hug one another. To love all the way with peace. Do not give them what they want."
A group of 11 Minneapolis City Council members said in a statement, "This morning an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, a member of our community. Renee was a resident of our city who was out caring for her neighbors this morning and her life was taken today at the hands of the federal government. Anyone who kills someone in our city deserves to be arrested, investigated, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
Minnesota Democratic Senator Tina Smith posted on X, "A US citizen has apparently been shot by ICE agents in Minneapolis. I’m gathering information, but the situation on the ground is volatile. ICE should leave now for everyone’s safety. Please be safe Minneapolis."
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, in a statement previously given to Newsweek: "This is the direct consequence of constant attacks and demonization of our officers by sanctuary politicians who fuel and encourage rampant assaults on our law enforcement who are facing 1,300% increase in assaults against them and an 8,000% increase in death threats. This is an evolving situation, and we will give the public more information as soon as it becomes available.”
What Happens Next?
Protests have erupted nationwide in response to Good’s death, and may well continue in the coming days as America continues to react to the shooting.
