Spencer Stone, an Airman best known for his role in foiling a gunman's attempt to attack a French train in August, was stabbed late Wednesday evening in Sacramento, according to multiple reports.

Stone is recovering from the attack and is now in stable condition. He was stabbed four times, including injuries to the heart and left lung. Information about a suspect or suspects remain unknown.

The incident happened around 12:45 a.m. when Stone and his friends were bar hopping. A Sacramento Police Department spokeswoman told NBC News there was a "verbal argument" before the stabbing and Stone was not targeted because of who he is. "It appears it was happenstance," she told the network.

For his efforts on the train, Stone received a Purple Heart.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
