'Resident Evil 2' Remake Demo Release Date and Gameplay: You Get Exactly 30 Minutes in Raccoon City, That's It

The first demo for the Resident Evil 2 remake will be available for download on January 11, but only for a limited window.

In the upcoming "1-Shot Demo," as Capcom is calling it, players will have to survive the zombie-infested Raccoon City for 30 minutes. But here comes the twist: finish the mission objective within the 30-minute window and the demo mission restarts, making the "1-Shot Demo" a looping challenge: how many loops can you achieve? Even death can't stop you from live, die, repeating all over Raccoon City, since the only factor in the "1-Shot Demo" is the ever-counting timer, just like the sands of time draining away the days of your own life.

The only playable character in the demo will be police officer Leon S. Kennedy, with the demo set right when he arrives at Raccoon City Police Station. Demo gameplay will include puzzles and zombies, of course, as Kennedy tries to escape the station with his flesh intact.

In case surviving Raccoon City doesn't sound stressful enough, Capcom announced another peculiar feature of the demo: "players cannot restart the playable demo after their time is up."

30 minutes is all you'll get with the Resident Evil 2 remake before the full game's January 25 release date.

With only a few videos released so far, the "1-Shot Demo" will be the best chance for players to check out the Resident Evil 2 remake and experience how the game's been changed since the 1998 original.

More than just a port with updated graphics, Capcom is introducing to Resident Evil 2 the over-the-shoulder camera gameplay style that revolutionized the series beginning with Resident Evil 4. Resident Evil 2 will also include "modernized controls," according to a press release from Capcom. Best of all for fans of the zombie genre, Resident Evil 2 promises to be one of the goriest video games of all time. We're talking Bonestorm here. They're calling it the "Technical Gore" system; it's breathtaking.

The "1-Shot Demo" is only available for a limited time, with the download window ending January 31. Completing the demo reveals a new trailer for the Resident Evil 2 remake, which won't be released anywhere else—just to demo participants.

The new Resident Evil 2 will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC beginning January 25.
