'Resident Evil 2' Tofu Survivor and Unlockable Bonus Modes Announced

A cult-favorite character is back for the Resident Evil 2 remake, but it isn't a name you might be expecting. Unlockable bonus modes are making a return, which means The Tofu Survivor mode is back, starring everyone's favorite block of bean curd.

While this may seem like an odd inclusion for Resident Evil 2, Tofu has a long history with the Resident Evil franchise. The prepared food was originally created as a stand-in for the player character, to test the collision detection of the original Resident Evil 2, and was left in as a joke. Tofu also made a minor appearance in Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles in a secret mode, and was on the list of possible fighters in Marvel vs Capcom 3 before being cut.

In the original 1998 release of Resident Evil 2, Tofu can be unlocked after completing The 4th Survivor bonus mode. Unlocking The 4th Survivor requires completing both the Leon and Claire scenarios with an A rating. Once the first bonus mode is unlocked, players must complete it as well to unlock The Tofu Survivor.

The Tofu Survivor is basically identical to The 4th Survivor, including identical voiceover lines as HUNK, the character from The 4th Survivor. Adding to the challenge, Tofu can only use a knife and healing herbs, but can take more damage than the human characters. The soyful square changes colors to indicate its health, going from a healthy white to a near-dead red color. Tofu also turns pink when poisoned.

It is unknown at this point if The Tofu Survivor game mode is locked behind the same requirements in the Resident Evil 2 remake, or if it will be available from the first time you boot up the game.

Resident Evil 2 will be available for PS4, Xbox One and PC on January 25.
