Retiring Therapy Dog Receives Heartwarming Standing Ovation from Hospital Staff

Last week, a California Medical Center held a heartwarming sendoff for the retirement of one of its long-time therapy dogs, Tassy.

On April 30, the staff at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, California honored Tassy's years of service by giving her what they call a "Code Sun celebratory walk." The center's staff lined the corridors and clapped and cheered for Tassy as she walked by with her owner. She was showered with "oohs" and "ahhs" by the staff along with praise for being a "good girl." Though everyone was wearing a mask, smiles could be seen in the eyes of everyone as Tassy completed her final lap around the center.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the medical center shared that Service League Volunteer Geri Azavedo had been bringing sweet Tassy to the center for more than eight years.

"Over that time, Tassy's gentle nature has brought joy and solace to so many," said the center in the post. "Although Geri will continue as a volunteer with us, 12-year-old Tassy will be enjoying the sweet peace of retirement at home."

Azavedo was given a "Thank you, Tassy" banner that included a photo of the pair as well as kind messages from the staff at Doctors Medical. Other gifts included a "Paw-some award," which was given to Tassy in recognition of her "outstanding service career at Doctors Medical Center." And because no party would be complete without a cake, Azavedo enjoyed a small cake that was designed to look just like her furry companion, bandana and all.

Also during her paw-some retirement "paw-ty," Tassy passed over her duties to another of the center's therapy dogs, Bria. In the Facebook post, Doctors Medical shared that Bria is a certified facility dog with Canine Companions for Independence. Bria currently greets patients, visitors and staff with Jeremy Brown, the center's chaplain.

Pictures taken during the celebration show the two dogs interacting with one another and enjoying their time with other party-goers.

Of course, the volunteers and staff won't be the only ones who will miss Tassy in her retirement. Said one commenter on Facebook: "Sweethearts one and all. Bless your hearts from a fan. Thank you both."

Said another: "Awww, thank you both for bringing some peace and joy to the sick and suffering. Tassy, enjoy your retirement."

"We will miss Tassy," said Doctors Medical in the post, "but we wish her all the snuggles and treats in her retirement!"
