Rey Mysterio's appearance at the Royal Rumble 2018 received the largest pop of the night. But since then, rumors and speculation involving the former WWE Superstar's return have run rampant, especially as we get closer to WrestleMania 34 .
Reports of negotiations between Mysterio and the WWE have made the rounds even before his Royal Rumble appearance. Now new updates on the situation have come to light, making it difficult to sift through all of the talk to get to the truth.
The first update comes from Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, who tweeted that Mysterio was backstage on this week's Smackdown Live in Los Angeles to negotiate a new deal. Barrasso gave another update on the Mysterio situation stating that the wrestler is finalizing a deal to return to the WWE and that he will face John Cena at Wrestlemania 34.

According to wrestling site PWInsider, "while Mysterio and WWE are indeed gearing up their talks, we have been told by several sources that Mysterio was not actually in LA last night. " The report reiterates that Rey Mysterio's appearance during the Rumble was a one-night thing and that talks for a return have been ongoing since Mysterio's exit in 2015. However, WWE wants Mysterio to return ina full-time capacity, which the 43-year-old does not want to do.
Cena's current storyline has the 16-time WWE champion without an opponent at this year's WrestleMania. He has won a spot in the Fastlane PPV's title match against current champ AJ Styles, Dolph Ziggler, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens and Baron Corbin but that doesn't guarantee a spot at this year's show. Mysterio could appear at Fastlane to spark he and Cena's feud heading into WrestleMania but there are no reports to suggest that will happen.
Mysterio is confirmed to wrestle Jushin Liger at the New Japan Pro Wrestling "Strong Style Evolved" event in Long Beach, Calif. on March 25. WrestleMania 34 will take place in New Orleans on April 8, giving the company only a short window to build up Mysterio vs Cena, if that is indeed the plan.
