'Rick and Morty' Season 5 Episode 1: Who is Mr. Nimbus?

Rick and Morty announced their arrival back on our screens with a spectacular season 5 opener that could change everything going forwards.

Rick, Morty, Beth, Jerry and Summer all got a chance to shine in episode 1, while Morty's long time crush Jessica finally got to join in on an adventure.

Writers Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland managed to pack an incredible amount of plot and jokes into just 22 minutes of television. We'll try and explain all the confusing plot points of episode 1, "Mort Dinner Rick Andre" below.

What happens in Season 5 Episode 1 of Rick and Morty?

Settle in, because with multiple story threads and a lot of timeline logic, this may get complicated. The episode opens with Rick and Morty on a dangerous adventure that goes south fast.

Morty saves Rick's life amid unknown chaos, bundles him into their ship and flies them home. Unfortunately it looks like the vehicle is breaking up upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere and Morty accepts his fate next to a passed out Rick.

Calling his crush Jessica one last time, Morty gets a new lease of life when they arrange a date, helping Morty to crash land the ship into the ocean, much to Rick's chagrin when he wakes up.

Enter Mr. Nimbus, Rick's once and eternal foe. He's the subject of everyone's ire throughout the episode and no one seems to take this "strange horny ocean man" seriously except Rick.

Since a treaty was broken when Rick and Morty touched the ocean, the family home plays host to peace talks in an effort to smooth things over with the dreaded Mr. Nimbus.

The Wine Timeline Explained

What should seemingly be a menial household task becomes a major catalyst for the anarchic events of the Rick and Morty Season 5 opener. Harmon and Roiland have previously stated they're trying to veer away from time travel components in this show, so much so that "time travel stuff" is literally boxed away in Rick's garage. However the writers' use of time-bending mechanics in episode 1 creates an entertaining and impressively intelligent way to drive the plot.

Rick chooses to store wine in an alternate dimension where time moves faster, sort of like a Narnia thing, as Morty so elegantly puts it. The bottles of wine age by decades each time they get thrown through a portal, and it's Morty's job to keep collecting them.

Morty has to keep returning to the portal for Rick and Mr. Nimbus, all whilst also hosting Jessica on a date. Upon entering the portal the first time, a friendly creature named Hoovy (Jim Gaffigan) helps him carry to bottles through the portal, inadvertently stepping away from his own timeline for decades.

When Hoovy returns he discovers the rotting corpse of his wife and his now grown son who stabs him for leaving them. Hoovy's son then vows revenge on the "the boy from the magic door," a grudge that is past on through generations within Hoovy's family and species.

Back in the Smith house, Summer has been sent off on a covert mission to destroy the source of Mr. Nimbus' powers while Rick negotiates a new treaty.

Jerry and Beth are making progress with their marriage as a newly "sex-positive" couple, as they frequently discuss in front of the rest of the family. This catches the eye of Mr. Nimbus and he offers them a threesome. This proposition keeps the pair occupied throughout the episode as they discuss whether to go through with it.

Meanwhile, Morty, who is trying to juggle a date with collecting wine through the Narnia portal, is confronted by the repercussions of his actions as Hoovy's race continue to evolve. He's attacked several times upon trying to retrieve the wine until eventually Morty loses it and decides to use science to destroy the Medieval surroundings through the door. This just helps the civilization grow further.

Morty and Jessica's first kiss

Against all the odds, Morty's date with Jessica goes well. After the pair share a kiss, Rick calls Morty in to have him witness the signing of a new agreement with Mr. Nimbus. At this moment a member of Hoovy's race opens the Narnia portal and emerges to attack Morty in the Smith family home. Jessica saves the day but gets dragged into the time bending dimension as a result.

Morty returns to save Jessica only to get captured, and discover that she's been frozen in time on the other side in what is now a futuristic "cyber-punk bird" era. The pair barely escape before calling for Rick's help and the trio are captured through the portal. Just as it looks like the end for them, Mr. Nimbus emerges and showcases his aquatic powers, drowning the cyber surroundings and saving the day.

Post-Credits payoff for Beth and Jerry

After Jessica is saved, Morty tries to rekindle their moment before she was captured. She goes on to recount that she has now lived for decades in time, witnessing everything and no longer wants to date him. As she walks away she proclaims to be a Time God.

Summer returns from her mission as Nimbus and Rick are arguing holding his magic shell. She blows on it giving Nimbus even more strength which he uses to beat up Rick before the police come (did we mention that Mr. Nimbus controls the police?) and arrest Rick.

As for Beth and Jerry, the pair are disappointed that their proposed threesome with Mr. Nimbus fell through, especially as Jerry was promised a gift basket. The post-credit scene sees Beth and Jerry standing outside a mystery door, discussing whether they should back out of what they're about to do. Nimbus opens the door before they get cold feet, and the couple eagerly enter his room, complete with a nautical-themed bed.
