Rick Santorum Says if Democrats Pick Someone 'Old' like Bernie Sanders or Joe Biden, Republicans Will Win 2020 Presidential Election

During an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday, former senator Rick Santorum said he's confident that the Republicans will win the 2020 presidential election unless the Democrats "pick someone unexpected."

Santorum, who works as an analyst for CNN, took part in a panel discussing the reported dozens of Democrats weighing whether or not to run for president in 2020.

When asked by "State of the Union" host Jake Tapper if there was anyone he was afraid of that might run for the office, Santorum said:

"When the Democrats win, they pick someone unexpected. Or someone that is not the favorite — Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter — when they pick John Kerry or Al Gore or Hillary Clinton, they lose. So I'm hoping for Bernie [Sanders] or Elizabeth [Warren] or somebody like that. Some tired, old [like] Joe Biden, put them out there and we'll win. If they pick someone new then I think they have a chance."

Fellow CNN panelist, Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a Republican himself, chimed in to say that the Democratic party needed someone that could be a "unifying voice" for the country.

Kinzinger went on to say that he believed the Democratic party would select a far-left candidate for the Democratic National Committee's 2020 presidential nomination.

"Right now, you see even the leadership of Nancy Pelosi, they're begging for their far-left, they're turning to the far-left," Kinzinger said. "If it was a centrist party, I think they'd put somebody up like Joe Biden and unlike Senator Santorum, I actually think Biden would be a tough candidate."

When asked by a third panelist, Nina Turner, President of Our Revolution, what Kinzinger considered 'far-left,' he responded with former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders' name.

"Let me tell you something, wanting people to have a $15 an hour minimum wage, wanting to make sure that people have Medicare for all ... there is no far-left, so don't paint Sanders and other people like that," Turner said.

Kinzinger followed up to say that he thinks Biden could defeat Trump given his record of running as a centrist.

"He can attract the kind of people voting for Donald Trump, the middle class, the blue-collar workers. I think he's the one that can take that away." Kinzinger said. "If you put somebody like Bernie Sanders up, it's just out of the stream of what people want."

Towards the end of the segment, Santorum added that in the midterm elections, some close races were run in key states such as Georgia, Texas, and Florida and that while he believes all that candidates — such as Beto O'Rourke and Stacey Abrams — are all far-left, the best communicator often wins.

"It's the messenger," Santorum said. "The best communicator wins. Donald Trump is a great communicator. You might not like him, but he's a great communicator. The [Democrats] have to find someone who is a great communicator."

While none of the considered heavyweights of the Democratic party such as Sanders, Biden, Warren, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, California Senator Kamala Harris, and celebrity favorite O'Rourke have officially announced their candidacy, most are believed to be exploring the possibility or seriously considering running for the post.

The Washington Post reported on Friday that an unprecedented number of Democrats are considering throwing their hats into the ring.
