Jewish Groups Call Rudy Giuliani an Anti-Semite After Former Mayor Claims He's 'More of a Jew' Than Holocaust Survivor George Soros

Several United States-based Jewish groups blasted President Donald Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani as an outright "anti-Semite" after he repeatedly claimed he's "more of a Jew" than Holocaust survivor and philanthropist George Soros.

A wide swath of mainly progressive Jewish-American organizations and activist leaders ridiculed the Republican former New York City mayor, who was raised Catholic by Italian-American parents, for denigrating the left-wing financier Soros as less Jewish than himself. During an interview with New York Magazine last week, Giuliani said his support for the state of Israel makes him "more of a Jew" than Soros, who managed to escape Holocaust death camps by posing as a Christian in Nazi-occupied Hungary during World War II. Progressive Jewish groups began sharing the "Rudy is an anti-Semite" hashtag on Twitter in solidarity with Soros and other ethnic Jews.

"#RudyIsAnAntisemite pass it on," remarked the American-Jewish progressive activist group IfNotNow on Twitter Tuesday afternoon.

"Don't take it from George Soros, who survived the Holocaust; take it from Rudy Giuliani, who not only wasn't in the Holocaust but isn't even Jewish," replied political pundit Brian Tyler Cohen.

"Rudy Giuliani is not Jewish. But he is absolutely antisemitic. As a non-Jew, he doesn't get to decide or determine anyone's Jewishness. And he's no friend of our Jewish community when he pushes antisemitic Soros conspiracy theories that put Jews in danger and get us killed," replied Bend the Arc: Jewish Action, the political advocacy arm of the progressive U.S.-based organization.

Giuliani told New York last week, "Don't tell me I'm antisemitic if I oppose him. Soros is hardly a Jew. I'm more of a Jew than Soros is. I probably know more about—he doesn't go to church...He doesn't belong to a synagogue, he doesn't support Israel, he's an enemy of Israel ... He's elected eight anarchist district attorneys in the United States. He's a horrible human being."

On Christmas Eve, Giuliani remarked on Twitter, "Soros has funded many enemies to the State of Israel, including groups that support BDS, who's ultimate goal is to destroy the Jewish homeland. Those who oppose these groups are not only better Jews, but better people than him. Most certainly not anti-Semitic."

"Oh hell no," Rabbi Alisa Wise, the acting co-Executive Director at Jewish Voice for Peace, a left-leaning activist group which focuses much of its attention on Zionism and the Palestine-Israeli conflict, replied to Giuliani's tweet.

When pressed on whether or not "#RudyIsAnAntisemite" trivializes antisemitic remarks by passing around a "fun hashtag," widely followed Jewish Twitter user David Weissman remarked, "It's not about having fun, it's about accountability. Did you not read Rudy's interview or see his latest tweet?"

Giuliani posted a picture of himself attending a Catholic Midnight Mass church service conducted by Archbishop of New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan Tuesday night, which prompted more mockery and doubts about his claims to the Jewish faith.

"My favorite Bible story is the one where Jesus's Manic Bug-Eyed Free TV Lawyer™ claims he's more Jewish than a holocaust survivor. what's yours, Rudy?" tweeted Jeff Tiedrich.

"Not more jewish than George Soros #themoreyouknow," replied author Molly Jong-Fast.
