Runaway 'Barney the Bull' Captured Two Months After Escaping Slaughterhouse

A runaway bull named Barney was captured on Wednesday, more than two months after he escaped from a slaughterhouse in Long Island, New York.

In a press release posted on Facebook, the Suffolk County SPCA said that at approximately 11 a.m. local time on Wednesday, Barney was captured by Mike Stura, the founder of Skylands Animal Sanctuary & Rescue.

According to the press release, Stura set up a coral and a feeder to lure Barney to a "former duck farm located on Barnes Road in Moriches."

Barney will now be transported to Skylands Animal Sanctuary & Rescue in Wantage, New Jersey. The sanctuary is "a 232-acre farm housing many rescued and abused animals," the Suffolk County SPCA said.

"Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross would like to thank the Suffolk County Police Department and Suffolk County Police Aviation for their assistance throughout this process," the press release said. "They made all department resources available, including helicopters, drones and digital signs on Sunrise Highway warning drivers to use caution."

The statement continued: "Suffolk County SPCA was the lead agency in coordinating the efforts of the rescue groups. Our SPCA large animal veterinarian was also available. We posted signs throughout the area warning residents to be cautious and to contact authorities immediately.

"We would like to thank everyone for their support and concern as well as rescue groups who also assisted during this ordeal."

Barney, who weighed approximately 1,500 pounds, first escaped the Long Island slaughterhouse after breaking through a fence on July 20. He "was seen running through a residential neighborhood in the Moriches/Mastic area," the Suffolk County SPCA said.

In a Facebook post, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone wrote: "After months on the run, the escaped bull that captured the hearts of Suffolk residents and gained a national following has been found safe and sound! Barney is headed to New Jersey where he will live out the rest of his days at the Skyland Animal Sanctuary."

Bellone offered gratitude to those who helped in the search for Barney, "including the Suffolk County Police Department, and thanks to the Animal Rescue groups who never gave up hope. While Barney will be missed, we hope he enjoys his new home in New Jersey."

Newsweek was directed to the press release after reaching out to the Suffolk County SPCA for comment.
