Rusev Replaced by Chris Jericho to Face Undertaker at 'Greatest Royal Rumble'

A day after Rusev was scheduled to face The Undertaker in a casket match at the Greatest Royal Rumble event, WWE announced Chris Jericho will replace the Bulgarian Brute and go on to face The Deadman. WWE confirmed to Newsweek that Rusev will take Jericho's spot in the 50-man Royal Rumble match.

According to WWE.com, Rusev was pulled from the casket match after his manager and wife Lana took to Twitter to announce she has swayed WWE to not let the Bulgarian Brute take part in such a match.

PWInsider Elite Audio's Mike Johnson cited Rusev asking for his release prior to WrestleMania 34 as one possible reason for him being added last-minute to the U.S. Championship match. A conflicting report from Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer claimed Rusev was added to the 'Mania match because his merchandise sales were too good to not include him.

Rusev took to Twitter the day after the announcement of his match with Undertaker with a funny, self-aware tweet about the likely outcome of the match. Whether this influenced WWE's decision to move Rusev from his one-on-one match with Taker to the 50-man Rumble is unknown.

The Greatest Royal Rumble event will have the 50-man Rumble match along with the Taker/Jericho casket match, a one-on-one bout between John Cena and Triple H, and all seven men's titles being defended. The confirmed title matches are Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns in a cage match for the Universal Title, Usos vs Bludgeon Brothers for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships, The Bar vs either The Revival/Matt Hardy/Bray Wyatt for the RAW Tag Team Championships and an Intercontinental ladder match between Seth Rollins, Miz, Finn Balor and Samoa Joe.

The Greatest Royal Rumble event is set to stream live on the WWE Network on April 27 at 12 p.m. EDT.
