EXCLUSIVE: 'RWBY' Volume 5 Crew Discuss Series Evolution in Behind-the-Scenes Clip

Volume 5 of Rooster Teeth's popular animated series RWBY not only brought the story of Remnant and our favorite huntresses to the next level, but gave RWBY fans a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the series with CRWBY as we head into season six.

Any RWBY fan who wants to learn about the evolution of the series will want to pick up the RWBY Volume 5 home release (out now). The DVD and Blu Ray release does contain every episode of CRWBY, which highlights the animation process and introduces everyone involved from the engineers, animators and everything in between.

"It's fantastic to give the fans a better perspective on how their favorite shows get made. There are so many hardworking and talented crew people contributing to every shot and sound of the show, I want them to be recognized for their contributions, and I want the audience to understand just what it takes to make each story moment special," Gray G. Haddock, Head of Animation at Rooster Teeth, told Newsweek. "We are definitely talking about continuing to tell the tales of life on the crew, and we'll see whether that happens with the return of the CRWBY behind the scenes show or in some other form."

RWBY 's story began five years ago, and a lot has changed since. The combination of the the untimely passing of series creator Monty Oum, and various production changes have transformed the series. A behind-the-scenes retrospective included in the home release, "5 Years of RWBY," explores how the production has changed over the years.

"We had no idea what sort of reception or industry success we were stumbling backwards into. We were just making the show we wanted to make, and hoped that other people out there might enjoy seeing it as well," Haddock said. "I don't know how you would design a show from its inception to become what RWBY has. That would be like trying to fulfill the joke of 'go make a viral video.' You can't force that kind of magic to happen. All you can do is be very appreciative of the people who take the time to check out your work and then continue to support you."

The RWBY retrospective includes never-before-seen interviews with cast and crew, including principal writers (and voices of Neptune and Jaune) Kerry Shawcross and Miles Luna. In the exclusive clip above, Shawcross and Luna discuss their experiences making the show and how it's still a learning process for them even five years later.

But, as Haddock points out, some things about RWBY may have changed, but the factors that make the show a success remain constant. "We are proud of the technological advances our team has poured themselves into, and our continued overall evolution, to be sure. But I'd hope the community would be surprised to learn how much the heart of the production has not changed," he said. "There have been so many challenges through the years, both in terms of hardships as well as how you handle success. But I think I'm most proud of how this team is still so motivated to tell the tale of Team RWBY with the same passion and charm we had on Volume 1."
