Savannah Guthrie's Tough Questioning of Trump at Town Hall Sees Social Media Following Soar

Savannah Guthrie gained thousands of social media followers after her tough questioning of President Donald Trump during the NBC Town Hall event, part of a series of presidential debates ahead of the election.

Guthrie was praised—and criticized—for her tough questioning of Trump and for fact-checking the president in real-time. But her performance at the town hall clearly made an impression and gained the broadcast journalist thousands of new fans on social media.

NBC hosted the Town Hall event after Trump refused to take part in a virtual debate with Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) decided that the second presidential debate should be held virtually due to Trump's COVID-19 diagnosis, but Trump's team refused to take part.

Biden went ahead with a Town Hall event on ABC on Thursday evening, prompting Trump to host his own event on NBC at the same time. But during the event, Trump faced tough questioning and Guthrie was praised for keeping Trump on-topic and correcting misinformation on the spot.

Legendary journalist Carl Bernstein said: "Great work by Savannah Guthrie under most difficult of circumstances, none of her making."

Journalist Liam Stack said: "Savannah Guthrie is doing very well so far in this format. She's being direct, persistent, correcting misinformation, and not letting the president avoid answering questions. Future debate moderators should take notes."

Republicans, on the other hand, called Guthrie, rude, disrespectful, biased, and aggressive.

Fox host Laura Ingraham said: "Has any media person ever challenged Biden like Savannah Guthrie is with Trump?"

Former New York Police Commissioner Bernard B. Kerik, who was jailed for eight felony charges, but was later pardoned by Trump, said: "The @DNC propaganda press, I cannot even fake it. Savannah Guthrie [looks] like an unhinged as*, and it's a shame.

"I thought she was better than that. The good thing for President Donald Trump...Any reasonable viewer could see she was biased, obnoxious, and on a mission."

Either way, Guthrie's performance made an impression, as demonstrated by her thousands of new followers on Twitter and Instagram.

According to Social Blade, Guthrie's Twitter followers increased by around 23,000 following the event, with her follower number now standing at 944,000. IG Blade reports that Guthrie also gained 7,000 new Instagram followers following the event and now has 961,000 followers on the app.

Furthermore, IG Blade predicts that Guthrie's popularity will continue to grow, as she is expected to gain another 21,000 Instagram followers over the next six months. Social Blade also predicts that Guthrie will gain another 20,000 followers on Twitter over the next six months.
