How 'Schitt's Creek' Dominated the 2020 Emmys

Schitt's Creek made history Sunday night by becoming the first show to ever sweep the four main Emmys comedy acting categories (both lead and both supporting categories) in a single season. That was just part of the Canadian hit's story, as it swept the comedy categories with seven big wins.

In quick fashion, the show racked up the first awards of the night with Catherine O'Hara winning "lead actress in a comedy series," while her onscreen husband, Eugene Levy, followed by taking the trophy for "lead actor in a comedy series."

Eugene's son and fellow show co-creator, Daniel Levy, then picked up "supporting actor in a comedy series" before sharing the award for "outstanding directing for a comedy series" with Andrew Cividino. The younger Levy wasn't finished, also winning "outstanding writing for a comedy series," and Schitt's Creek continued dominating the evening when Annie Murphy got "supporting actress in a comedy series," and the show itself capped off the night when it was named best comedy series.

Going into the night, pundits essentially pitted Schitt's Creek against fellow critical darling The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The latter won big at the previous two years Emmys for its first two seasons, but Schitt's Creek grew from an underground hit into a sensation entering this year's 6th and final season.

The story certainly carries a David versus Goliath strain, as Amazon threw a lot of money into publicizing The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, while it took Pop TV's Schitt's Creek getting picked up on Netflix for its audience to grow.

Maisel fans will have another shot at Emmy redemption, but when exactly is unclear. The show was unsurprisingly picked up for a 4th season, but production halted due to the coronavirus pandemic. With many shows essentially facing the same circumstances, the Emmys next year could possibly seem even stranger next year.

As for Schitt's Creek, the show leaves major high note. While Daniel Levy has ruled out a 7th season, he seems to be at least somewhat open to a reunion of the Rose family and the rest the show's characters.

"If an idea crosses my path that I feel is deserving of our cast's time, then let's do it," Levy told in the Variety earlier this year. "...I would love to revisit these characters, and I would love to get to play with this cast again. I feel very proud of the work that we've done, and I wouldn't want to do anything that compromises that."
