'Sean Astin from 'Stranger Things'': People Angrily Point Out Actor Was Famous Long Before Netflix Show

Thousands of people took to Twitter to express their appreciation for the work of actor Sean Astin, after a tweet seemingly suggesting he was famous only thanks to one of his more recent roles went viral.

The tweet, from New Zealand-based Twitter user @samxgrace shows The Goonies and Lord of the Rings star, with the message: "idk who needed this but Sean Astin from Stranger Things with an otter."

The original post has since been retweeted nearly five thousand times. However, many took exception to the fact the writer apparently felt the need to explain who the actor was, and only with reference to one prominent role among many.

"He did not lead a group of misfits through booby trapped infested caves to find one-eyed Willie's treasure to just be known as the guy from Stranger Things," tweeted @Badhombre, in reference to Astin's lead role as Mikey in The Goonies.

Other Twitter users also expressed outrage that Astin's many popular films were ignored in favor of his role as Winona Ryder's love interest in the second season of the Netlfix sci-fi horror show.

I’m sorry but Sean Aston didn’t get through a booby trapped series of cave tunnels to steal One Eyed Willy’s treasures to save his house/town, to be known as “Sean Astin from Stranger Things”. Y’all I’m DONE. The disrespect! pic.twitter.com/SwfpjHmGoS

In a series of later posts @samxgrace expressed her confusion over the high emotions which her otter/Astin tweet evoked online.

"I literally just love otters and somehow ww3 has started over which sean astin character is the most known IM SO SORRY," she wrote. She also shared deaths threats from people online outraged that she didn't refere to him as Samwise Gamgee from the Lord of the Rings franchise.

"Can people please stop quoting this with his other roles," she added. "He's a talented af actor, I'm from New Zealand I'm aware he is also Samwise. His Stranger Things role was recent.... that's literally all. couldn't list his entire IMDB page thank u..."

Astin himself took the opportunity to promote his new show.

"Whew, couldn't sleep tonight, woulda missed 'Sean Astin' & my Mom trending #1. The thread is like my kids fighting over who gets to hug me first and take a trip with me," he wrote.

"If y'all watch pt. 2 of #NoGoodNick on Netflix 2day, you'll get us a 2nd season. I'll post more Otter pics."
