Why It Matters

Seattle's current cold spell is notable for its sharp deviation from historical temperature norms. This week's average temperature of 33.57 degrees Fahrenheit is 9.43 degrees below the five-year average, representing a 21.93 percent drop.
These temperatures make it the coldest first week of February since 2019, when Seattle saw an even lower average of 31.17 degrees. The prolonged colder-than-usual conditions, coupled with snowfall, could disrupt daily life, impact transportation, and pose challenges for vulnerable populations.
Seattle Upcoming Weather Forecast
According to the latest forecast, Seattle will experience a mix of snow showers and cold temperatures throughout the week:
- February 3: Snow showers with a high of 38 degrees and a low of 30 degrees.
- February 4: A 40 percent chance of snow showers, with temperatures ranging from 36 to 26 degrees.
- February 5: A 50 percent chance of snow showers, with a high of 36 degrees and a low of 27 degrees.
- February 6-9: Continued chances of snow showers, with highs between 36 and 40 degrees and lows ranging from 26 to 31 degrees.
Comparing this week's temperatures to previous years, Seattle is experiencing its coldest early February in six years, except for 2019. In contrast, the same week in 2023 saw an average temperature of 45.5 degrees, 5.81 percent above the five-year norm.
What People Are Saying
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Seattle also issued a winter weather advisory for Monday, which remains in effect until 1 p.m. PST: "Additional snow accumulations up to one inch. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute. Slow down and use caution while traveling. Prepare for possible power outages."
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the NWS in Seattle wrote: "There is snow and or ice on a lot of roads out there this morning, especially side roads. Temperatures will not warm up much until late morning. Let's be careful, take your time, and get to your destination safely."
What Happens Next
A shift to slightly warmer temperatures is forecast by mid-February, though precipitation could continue in the form of rain or mixed showers.
As Seattle navigates this cold snap, residents should stay alert for further weather updates and potential advisories from the NWS.
