Selena Gomez Fans Think New Song 'Lose You to Love Me' is About Justin Bieber

Selena Gomez is back with a new single, "Lose You to Love Me," the lead track from her first studio album in four years, and the song has fans speculating that its pointed lyrics are about Gomez's ex Justin Bieber.

On "Lose You to Love Me," Gomez sings about escaping a toxic relationship and reaffirming her independence.

The lyrics include lines such as "I needed to hate you to love me" and "You set fires to my forest and you let it burn." But one line in particular has prompted Gomez's fans to ponder whether she is singing about Bieber: "In two months you replaced us like it was easy, made me think I deserved it."

Fans think the line may be a reference to Bieber dating and getting engaged to Hailey Baldwin in mid-2018, just months after splitting from Gomez.

On Twitter, fans praised Gomez's moving ballad for showing personal growth and moving on from a difficult chapter in her life.

"#LoseYouToLoveMe is hands down one of the best songs released this year. she really did THAT while opening her heart and soul," said one tweet.

"she's standing up for herself, putting herself first and i couldn't be happier. #LoseYouToLoveMe," wrote another fan.

The song also earned praise from Gomez's best friend Taylor Swift, who posted about it on her Instagram Stories. Swift wrote: "This song is a perfect expression of healing & my absolute favorite song she's put out yet. A triumph."

Gomez has yet to confirm the subject of the song, but in a note posted to Twitter upon its release the singer thanked Jesus for helping her rediscover herself. "Where my father has taken me and placing me is exactly where I am meant to be," wrote Gomez. "In my worst moments, like awful, most painful moments I never stopped falling to my knees wanting and needing only His love."

"Lose You to Love Me" has already reached No. 1 on the U.S. iTunes singles chart.

The accompanying music video was shot entirely on an iPhone 11.

Gomez released her last album Revival in 2015. Since then she's released songs intermittently but has not put out a new album, in part because of health issues plaguing her career. In September 2017, Gomez revealed she had to undergo a kidney transplant after experiencing kidney failure as a result of autoimmune disease lupus.

In October 2018, Gomez was reportedly hospitalized after experiencing a nervous breakdown.
