'Selena: The Series': Christian Serratos Stars as Selena Alongside This Stellar Cast

In the 25 years since Selena Quintanilla's untimely death, the superstar Tejano singer's legacy continues to impact fans across the globe. The inspiring story of her rise to fame and the chart-topping songs that solidified her position as one of the most beloved Mexican-American singers of all time will only continue to reach the masses thanks to Netflix's newest venture, Selena: The Series.

Set to release on the streaming platform on Friday, Selena: The Series follows Quintanilla's early years and shares moments of her life after her career skyrocketed. Unlike the 1997 Selena biopic, in which Jennifer Lopez starred as Quintanilla, Netflix's spot provides a more intimate depiction of the singer's journey, revealing details spanning across Quintanilla's life from the moment she was born—like, for instance, the interesting way her parents Abraham and Marcella Quintanilla came up with her name (the couple was originally told they were expecting a boy).

The show also offers more insight on Selena Quintanilla's family, their personal lives, as well as the contributions and sacrifices her siblings AB and Suzette Quintanilla and their parents made for the Selena y Los Dinos band.

Show creator Moisés Zamora searched far and wide to cast the part of Selena before offering the role to series lead Christian Serratos, who previously appeared in titles including The Walking Dead, Twilight, The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. Zamora revealed to Forbes that though Serratos was recommended for the part he knew instantly away that she the right fit.

"It was different when I met Christian because I did see that sort of sincerity, that kindness, there's level of light she exudes as a real person. That was key because Selena was that to a lot of people. I didn't have to convince anybody. She won that role, she convinced everyone, she deserved it. It's just a testament to her talent and her professionalism. For that, it was a no brainer that she was Selena," Zamora explained.

Serratos fellow castmates include former Desperate Housewives cast member Ricardo Chavira, who will play the singer's father in the Netflix series; The Purge cast member Gabriel Chavarria as AB Quintanilla; The Young and the Restless star Noemí Gonzalez as Selena's sister and Seidy Lopez as the Quintanilla matriarch. Nine-year-old Madison Taylor Baez, who will pick up her first major acting credit with the show, stars the young Selena Quintanilla.

Julio Macias of Netflix's popular series On My Block plays the role of Pete Astudillo, a member of Selena y Los Dios, who was crucial for the band's success. Meanwhile, Jesse Posey, who formerly appeared in Stitchers, will play guitarist and Selena Quintanilla's romantic interest who eventually becomes her husband, Chris Perez.

The first nine-episodes of Selena: The Series release on Netflix on Friday at 3 a.m. ET.
