Cosmopolitan's Sexiest Man of The Year in 1988 Appointed as U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand

Scott Brown, who was voted sexiest man of year by magazine Cosmopolitan in 1988, has been appointed the new U.S. ambassador to New Zealand.

A supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump, the former Republican senator for Massachussetts held controversial views, including speaking out as being pro-waterboarding. He was also one of the first politicians to back Trump. Brown is attempting to distance himself from his past by producing a video for New Zealand, where he introduces his dog Gracie to viewers.

Throughout the video, Brown talks openly about his childhood and his family.

"I am somebody who knows what it is like to be the underdog. Mum was on welfare, I remember getting those blocks of cheese ... I understand the value of a dollar. I don't care if it's an American dollar or a New Zealand dollar," he says.

He told viewers how his parents married young and divorced young too. "I lived in 17 houses by the time I was 18 ... I had to wrestle with a lot of things ... drunken stepfathers, a lot of physical abuse in the family."

The ambassador posed nude for the Cosmopolitan centrefold pages when he was a 22-year-old law student, for which he was paid $1,000.

The intimate video also introduced New Zealanders to his wife, a broadcaster, and his two children Ayla and Arianna.

His wife Gail Brown said neither of them had visited New Zealand before, but they were excited. " It's supposed to be the friendliest country in the world, that's what we're told, we're also told that sports play a big part in the culture there and we are a huge, huge sports family, We love outdoor adventure, love sports."

The video was generally well received on New Zealand social media, although several comments suggested he "overshared" during the video.
