To mark Mother's Day weekend, Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg posted a heartfelt description of what her life has been like as a single mother, calling on U.S. employers to establish equal work policies for mothers, especially working, single mothers in poverty.

By Sunday, the post had been shared more than 18,000 times and collected more than 69,000 likes on Facebook. Together with her late husband, Dave Goldberg, Sandberg built a reputation as one of the most successful working parents in Silicon Valley.

Sandberg has publicly championed gender equality throughout her career. In her Facebook post on Friday, she remarked that most single working women do not have the wealth or resources to ensure the safe care of their children.

"The United States is the only developed economy in the world that does not provide paid maternity leave," Sandberg noted, urging in her concluding thoughts that "we should give special thanks to the women who are raising children on their own."
