A post showing what appeared to be a trail of blood seeping from a wall inside a 104‑year‑old home has drawn attention on Reddit, leaving many viewers alarmed by the scene.
The post was shared by u/YeliahSenyab in the r/whatisit subreddit on April 1 and has since amassed around 25,000 upvotes. Titled “Looks like it came out of the wall during a bad rain,” the post featured images of a dark, reddish trail running along a basement wall, resembling dried or smeared blood.
“In my 104-year-old houses basement,” the poster wrote in the caption. “Hoping it’s not blood???”

The unsettling visuals quickly prompted speculation from other Reddit users, with many trying to determine what could have caused such a stain to appear inside the wall of an old home.
One commenter, u/strawberry_snoopy, suggested the substance could indeed be blood and raised the possibility of an animal-related cause. “This looks like blood,” they wrote. “Could an animal or something have died in your walls? Any bad smells in the area?”
U/queenhoho wondered the same: “Worst case scenario it could be actual blood, such as from an animal trapped inside the wall,” adding that it would likely be accompanied by an unpleasant smell as temperatures rose.
Others began to question whether the source could be a household pet.
U/Flat_Affect_9343 asked: “Do you have a cat? Might be urine with blood in it? Especially if the cat is prone to crystals.”
That theory resonated with several users who had encountered similar situations.
U/mitchandmickey shared their own experience, writing: “This happened to me! It was my cat peeing on the wall with a very sad bladder infection. I was absolutely convinced my house was bleeding though.”
As speculation continued, the original poster returned with an update that clarified the source of the mysterious stains.
“There were a couple comments that showed concern for my pets saying that it looked like urine with blood in it,” u/YeliahSenyab wrote in an update in the caption. “Although I felt pretty certain the blood was flowing from the wall down, I obviously wanted to rule this health concern out, so I made a vet appointment last night.”
The follow‑up revealed that the poster’s cat had been diagnosed with feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) after a urine analysis showed the presence of blood. “Anyway, my sweet kitty unfortunately has FIC,” the update continued. “There was blood also in her urine sample, so with this being said my vet is fairly certain that the blood came from my cat.”
According to International Cat Care (iCatCare), feline idiopathic cystitis is a common condition that causes signs of feline lower urinary tract disease, including blood‑tinged urine, painful or strained urination, and inappropriate urination. The charity notes that FIC is a complex, stress‑related condition that can be very painful and, in severe cases, lead to life‑threatening urinary blockages if left untreated.
Expressing relief and gratitude, the poster concluded: “I am so grateful for the people that pointed this out as a possibility. I’m glad you all had fun in the comments, but yes, no humans, mice, or menstrual cycles happening in the walls of this house. Just a kitty that was saved by Reddit.”
Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via the Reddit messaging system.
