Two skydivers died after they collided with each other midair over southern California, the company organising their jump said.

Lake Elsinore-based Skydive Elsinore said the experienced skydivers had a “normal and uneventful” start to their descent shortly before noon on Friday until their parachutes became tangled.

As they were preparing to land, the pair struck each other about 150 feet above the ground, causing their parachutes to snag.

“Both sustained critical injuries when they reached the ground,” the company said. The pair was rushed to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The skydivers, who have not been publicly identified, had been visiting from "out of town," the company said.

“There is no indication of any equipment malfunction,” it said, adding that it is “cooperating fully with local authorities.”

This is a developing story; more to follow.
