What Do Dogs Dream About?

According to VCA Animal Hospitals, dogs' dreams are similar to ours. Like humans, canines go through multiple sleep cycles, starting with slow wave sleep (SWS). During this stage, a dog's thought processes have stopped, but its muscles are still active, so sleep is less deep.

The rapid eye movement (REM) phase is when dreams occur. In this deeper stage of sleep, a dog's muscles will relax, but its mind is active. Their eyes dart back and forth behind their eyelids, and they may whine or bark, wag their tail, breath faster, and twitch or pedal their legs.

In his book Do Dogs Dream? animal researcher Stanley Coren found that large and small dogs dream differently. Larger dogs have longer sleep cycles, leading to longer dreams, while smaller dogs have shorter sleep cycles, so have short, more frequent dreams. Puppies and older dogs dream more often than middle-aged dogs, due to their brain stem being less developed or age-related decline.

What do dogs dream about? Although no one can know for sure, it's most likely day-to-day life, with studies showing dogs perform breed-specific behavior (such as snarling or barking) in their sleep.
