Video Shows Bear Stealing Halloween Candy After Breaking Into Michigan Couple's Car

A Michigan couple had an unexpected visit from a mama bear and her cubs this Halloween when the animals broke into their car to steal multiple bars of candy.

Brittany Magsig and her husband Ben, of East Lansing, shared video of the incident on social media, which showed the bears prowling around their holiday cabin in the Smoky Mountains before opening up a car door and taking food. One cub then gets stuck in the vehicle.

"I cannot make this up," Magsig wrote on her Facebook account on Thursday alongside the clip, which was filmed by the surprised couple from inside the home.

The news was reported by FOX 2 Detroit after the cell phone footage was uploaded to YouTube.

"She just opened my car door," the husband is heard saying in the recording. "Are you kidding me?" the wife responds. The larger bear, who was accompanied by at least three cubs, is then seen grabbing candy from the vehicle and walking away back into the woods.

The footage cuts briefly, before starting again to show that one of the bear cubs had become locked in the car after the door closed. The mama bear returns to the scene and starts to poke around in an attempt to rescue the cub, as Magsig phones Gatlinburg police for help.

The car alarm starts blaring with the cub inside. "He is messing up my car right now. Oh man, what are the chances?" the husband can be heard saying. Luckily, the couple were able to open the car windows remotely, and the cub escaped without injury.

A photo uploaded to Facebook by Magsig showed the damage to the vehicle, which was left with massive rips to the interior likely caused by the cub scraping in an attempt to leave. In the comment section under the post, the wife confirmed the vehicle was still functional.

Magsig wrote: "We are still processing this. Am I traumatized or on straight adrenaline? I have no idea. I see a furry black thing on the porch, I run to shut the front door in a panic. The momma bear opens our car, steals a box of full size candy bars.

"A cub somehow gets locked in the car, after we thought they left and we locked the car with our FOB. Nope. Bear is in there. Momma bear comes again looking for her cub. Wife is on the phone, frantic with Gatlinburg police. Cub gets out. Car is ripped to pieces on the inside."

The clip has been viewed thousands of times and attracted more than 100 comments since being uploaded. "Oh My Goodness! At least you have it on video so there's no question for insurance! Plus, you have a story to tell for years to come," one Facebook user said.

"Somehow we have to convince insurance we had four bears around our car and two inside," Brittany Magsig wrote. "Cheers! We've been here for an hour. Is it Moonshine time yet?"

The Smoky Mountains is a popular range along the Tennessee–North Carolina border and, fittingly, its official symbol is the American Black Bear. Approximately 1,500 bears live in the park, according to a fact sheet published by the local National Park Service (NPS). See the full video below:
