Millions of retirees will receive their monthly Social Security payment today.
Social Security benefits are paid every month to all recipients, but not every recipient is paid on the same day. Issued by the Social Security Administration (SSA), monthly benefits are paid to retired Americans, people with disabilities or who are blind, and surviving family members of deceased claimants. More than 68 million people receive money each month.

Today, Wednesday, June 26, those with birthdays in the latter part of any given month, between the 21st and 31st, will receive their monthly amount. This applies only to those who have not been claiming Social Security since before 1997.
Recipients born on dates earlier in the month should have already received their checks. Those born between the first and 10th of any month should have been paid on June 12, and those with birthdays falling between the 11th and 20th should have received their checks on June 18.

"We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don't have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment," the SSA confirmed in a 2022 blog post. "It does not mean that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment."
The SSA recommends waiting three working days from the payment date before contacting them if your payment does not come through when expected.
How much Social Security you are awarded is based on the age you started claiming and how much you earned during your highest-paid working years. The average amount paid out in January this year was $1,907, but the maximum available for qualifying beneficiaries is $4,873.
In 2024, the $4,873 limit is available only to those who retired at age 70. If you stop working and begin claiming at your retirement benefits at 62, the earliest age possible, your maximum benefit would be $2,710.
If unsure about how much they may be receiving each month, retirees can check how much money they should get using SSA's online calculator.
