Soldier Arrested After Trying to Stop Girlfriend From Getting Pain Medication During Birth

After a Crown Court hearing in York, northeast England, a 24-year-old soldier was sentenced to jail for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend and trying to stop her from receiving pain relief medicines as she was giving birth at Harrogate District Hospital.

The soldier, whose identity has not been revealed to protect the victim, was described as having acted "controlling and coercively" towards his partner for over a year, reported local outlet The Press yesterday.

Prosecutor Matthew Collins told the Press that the man allegedly "grabbed her by her throat as she was in labor at Harrogate District Hospital" in December of last year.

"There cannot be a more vulnerable position for a woman to be in," said Judge Simon Hickey, reported The Press.

According to Collins, the soldier allegedly had taken control of the 17-year-old victim's life, forcing her to cut ties with family and friends and monitoring her everyday movements and activities.

From September 2019 to January 2021, Collins alleged to the court, "She could not use the toilet without texting him for permission and then recording herself going to the toilet...to prove that that was what she was doing."

The court was informed of the incident last month following complaints from concerned midwives who reached out to the police after the initial incident in which the man refused to "allow her to have (intimate) examinations by midwives" and kept her "from having pain relief, including gas and air."

Collins also told the court that the man made death threats against the victim and her baby in order to silence her and keep her from testifying against him.

In a personal statement to The Press, the victim, who is now the mother of a baby girl, said that her mental health and self-confidence have been affected after months of torture, and she was "terrified every time she heard or saw a car" like her abuser's.

She added that she now has issues trusting people as a result of the abuse and still finds herself hesitant to do simple things her partner once demanded she ask permission to do, such as going to the bathroom or getting a drink.

"He is someone who is crying out for help," defense solicitor advocate Kevin Blount told the court, according to The Press "He would wish to apologize to the victim and to express his remorse and very sincerely regrets he has acted in this way and the harm he has caused her."

He added that the army is "already taking steps to end the boyfriend's military career."

The Press also reports that this was not the solider's first run-in with the law. He allegedly was convicted of domestic abuse years earlier for his behavior in a different relationship.

In this case, Judge Hickey sentenced him to 18 months in jail and issued a 10-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim "by any means."

Last week, a Colorado man was arrested in Thailand for stabbing his pregnant wife and killing her. He had a criminal history and was pleaded guilty on one count of third-degree assault in Boulder District Court.
