'Sonic the Hedgehog' Movie: Does Tails Appear in Credits Scene?

Sonic the Hedgehog has had a difficult journey on its way to cinemas, but the movie's makers nevertheless have some confidence that it will get a sequel and that an iconic Sonic character will appear in it.

This was hinted at by a mid-credits scene that saw a certain two-tailed fox appear in the movie for the first time.

In the scene, the character, known to his mother as Miles Prower but to legions of fans as "Tails," appears for the first time in the movie. We see Tails emerge out of a ring portal on a cliff close to Green Hills, Montana looking for Sonic (Ben Schwartz).

The alien fox says: "If these readings are accurate, he's here, I've found him...I just hope I'm not too late."

Then he runs off towards Emerald Hills, presumably to meet Sonic and get his help in whatever catastrophe needs some high-speed hedgehog running to help solve it.

In this scene, Tails is voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey. She has voiced Tails since the Sonic Boom TV series in 2014 as well as in video games like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020, Team Sonic Racing and Sonic Forces.

Tails appearing in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie would make sense as the character first debuted in the 1992 Sonic the Hedgehog 2 video game.

Just like in that game, it appears the pair will team up to take on Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey). The villain is seen just before the credits roll in the Mushroom Hill Zone promising to be "home by Christmas."

Tails is the only additional Sonic character introduced in the mid-credits scene, suggesting that other classic characters such as Knuckles the Echidna are being saved for later movies if they are made.

If early box office reports are anything to go by, a Sonic the Hedgehog sequel could be going into production very soon.

Per Variety, the film is expected to take between $40 million to $45 million over the President's Day holiday, with Deadline reporting the movie may make as much as $50 million. This would be enough to put it at the top of the box office charts over Birds of Prey, released the previous week to lower-than-expected takings.

However, following the movie's CGI redesign after the horrified online reaction to the Sonic trailer, the film has to make over $87 million just to break even.

As for the critical reception, the movie started with around a 70 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though this has since dropped to 65 percent.
