'Sonic the Hedgehog' Netflix Animated Series Release Date, Cast, Trailer, Plot

Sonic the Hedgehog has its 30th anniversary in 2021, and fans will have plenty of time to celebrate the blue speed racer across the next year. In fact, the character is kicking off his pearl anniversary with the announcement of Sonic Prime, a new animated series coming to Netflix from Sega, WildBrain and Ben 10 creators Man of Action Entertainment, who are acting as showrunners on the show.

Details of the Sonic the Hedgehog animated series are just starting to emerge, though we now have the show's first tentative release date and plot synopsis.

When is Sonic Prime out on Netflix?

So far, all we know is that the upcoming Sonic series is set for premiere in 2022, with Netflix set to premiere the series across the world.

24 episodes of the show have been ordered, though it has not been revealed whether these will be released all at once in smaller chunks of episodes as is becoming standard practice for the streaming service.

The official Netflix synopsis for the series reads: "The 24-episode animated adventure for kids, families, and long-time fans draws upon the keystones of the brand and features the 'Blue Blur' of video game fame in a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands. Sonic's adventure is about more than a race to save the universe, it's a journey of self-discovery and redemption."

Per a tweet from Netflix, the show will be in a 3D animated style.

This release comes after a the show was announced in a Netflix tweet back in December 2020, only for the streamer to swiftly delete a tweet that read: "Rings? Check. Sneakers? Check. SONIC. SEGA's legendary video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog races onto Netflix in a new 3D animated series from EGA, Wild Brain, and Man of Action Entertainment, prmiering in 2022." [sic]

Who is in the cast of Sonic Prime?

No casting details have yet been announced. However, the show is thought to be distinct from the Sonic the Hedgehog movie released in 2020, which featured Parks and Recreation actor Ben Schwartz voicing the character.

A recent tweet, however, suggests that the show is looking to replace Roger Craig Smith, who has voiced the hedgehog for a decade.

In late January, the actor hinted that he was leaving the role, saying: "Welp, 10 years was an amazing run. Onward to new zones!" His departure was then confirmed by Sega, who wrote, "For over 10 years, Roger Craig Smith has been an integral part of the SEGA family. He brought the voice of Sonic to life, and we are forever grateful for his never-ending enthusiasm in helping the community and spreading joy."

Is there a trailer for Sonic Prime?

Currently, no promo has been released for the upcoming show. In fact, all we have so far is an image of the show's new logo.

The show's 2022 release date suggests that we are in the early stages of production, so it is likely to be a few months before viewers will get their proper first look at the latest Sonic series.
