Sony Confirms Next Console In Development, Doesn't Specifically Mention 'PS5'

Sony has confirmed a next-generation console is in development. While this news isn't really that surprising (a console company is making a new console? Shocker!), the most interesting detail is that Sony hasn't explicitly called the new console PlayStation 5. Could this be the end of the PlayStation line as we know it?

Is Sony working on the PS5 or something else? Sony

That answer is likely "no," but you never know. In an article by the Financial Times, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said, "At this point, what I can say is it's necessary to have a next-generation hardware," bud didn't elaborate further on what he meant or if the new hardware had a name yet.

That's not a lot of information to use, but a source for the FT said the new console isn't going to be a massive departure from the PS4. The source was quoted saying the next Sony console "might not represent a major departure from the PS4, and that the fundamental architecture would be similar."

It is possible whatever Sony has cooking isn't actually the next step in gaming hardware. Based on the above quote, the new console may be closer to what we already have than something different. It's possible Sony is working on something that would serve as competition for the Nintendo Switch and Microsoft's newly announced xCloud streaming service. Both the Switch and xCloud allow for gaming on the go, so Sony's next console may be more a successor to the PS Vita than anything else.

This isn't the first time we've heard about a new console from Sony. A rumor from earlier this year suggested we'll see the next console release in 2019. Earlier rumors had also suggested a late 2019 or early 2020 release.

Speaking of new consoles, it looks like Nintendo is also gearing up to release an updated version of the Switch next year. Nintendo hasn't officially commented on the possibility of updated Switch hardware yet, but sources say it could be on store shelves as early as summer 2019.
