Coogler is set to produce the film with Random Act of Flyness (HBO) creator Terence Nance as director. Space Jam 2 is the sequel to Michael Jordan's 1996 hit. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros is aiming for a 2019 production start (sometime in the NBA offseason).

"The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie," James told THR, "It's so much bigger. I'd just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don't just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people."

Black Panther was one of the most groundbreaking movies of all time, and one of the highest grossing of 2018. "I loved his vision" for Black Panther, James told THR. "For Ryan to be able to bring that to kids, it's amazing."

Space Jam 2 isn't the only recent announcement for James' SpringHill Entertainment company. James and John Legend will produce a TV series based on Lean on Me, the Morgan Freeman movie about a tough-talking principal who cleans up an inner-city school, for the CW. James and Elizabeth Banks are also attached to a women's basketball drama called Hoops on NBC.
