Arsene Wenger has confirmed interest in signing Valencia's Shkodran Mustafi but revealed Arsenal is "struggling" to locate players in the transfer market.

Mustafi, the German defender, has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium this summer as Wenger desperately seeks defensive cover.

With Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista out injured, the French manager suggested the club was close to getting a deal done with Valencia, which values the player at £50 million ($66 million).

"Mustafi? We hope it will be done. He is one of a number of players we are looking at," Wenger told French TV station SFR Sport.

"We are struggling to find the players we need, but we must be responsible.

"Mustafi is one of a number of players we are looking at, but, yes, negotiations are ongoing."

Wenger takes Arsenal to Vicarage Road on Saturday after taking just one point from the first two games of the Premier League season.
