Antonio Conte's summer transfer target Romelu Lukaku has revealed he could have moved to Italian giants Juventus from Everton during the open window.

Lukaku, who left Stamford Bridge for Everton permanently in 2014, was pursued by new Chelsea manager Conte as the Italian tried to strengthen his attacking force.

Despite Everton holding firm against its Premier League rivals, the 23-year-old says he could have made the switch to Serie A where he could play in the Champions League.

"It stings a little [not being in Europe], but I'm someone who believes that everything happens for a reason," he told Het Nieuwsblad.

"Otherwise, I would have gone to Juventus instead of staying at Everton. But I opted for Everton because it was too early for Italy and I have not done badly here.

"I knew of the interest of a few clubs, it was quickly very clear that Everton would not let me go. It was important to me that I remained calm and I did.

"I said to myself that I will do my best and who knows what will happen in the future."

Conte is expected to return to Merseyside in January when the transfer window reopens as he is keen to add a striker to his squad.

Belgian forward Michy Batshuayi joined in the summer but, despite remaining at the club, Diego Costa admitted he was close to leaving for Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea has a perfect start in the Premier League with three wins from three games.
