Southampton defender Jose Fonte has revealed Jose Mourinho did try to lure him to Manchester United during the summer transfer window.

Fonte had been linked with the Old Trafford club as Mourinho looked to add experience to a youthful backline which included new signing Eric Bailly.

While on international duty with Portugal, the 32-year-old confirmed he had been the subject of a bid from the Premier League giants.

"Was I disappointed the Man United move didn't happen? Let's leave that for another time," Fonte said. "Now I'm focused on Southampton."

Fonte added that he aims to play in the Champions League, the World Cup, and to lift a trophy while playing in England.

Later the Portuguese center-back released a statement regarding the interview.

He wrote: "Once in the national team, only national team interviews/talks are allowed hence my 'let's leave that for another time', when asked about questions regarding my own club situation.

"To make it perfectly clear to everyone that might have some difficulty understanding I am a Southampton player, and proudly have been since 2010, understand that once I step on the pitch with the saints shirt and armband I give my blood, sweat and tears for the club and will always will no matter what you read or think."

Fonte added that he was "fully committed" to both Southampton and Portugal.
