Jose Mourinho's criticism of England defenders Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw is wrong, according to Gareth Southgate.

The Portuguese Manchester United manager appeared to criticize the duo following his team's 3-1 victory over Swansea City on Sunday, concluding that the pair were not fully committed.

But Southgate, who is preparing his team to face Scotland at Wembley Stadium on Friday, says he does not view Smalling and Shaw in the same way as Mourinho.

"I don't know Chris well but that wouldn't be my impression, having worked with him," the England manager said.

"Luke I know well, and Luke's had a really tough injury. I think very often it's easy to look from the outside or to make judgements on people without knowing them really, really well.

"If Luke wasn't fit to play yesterday—and he was with us in September under [former England manager] Sam Allardyce and was feeling problems with the leg—there's clearly something.

"After an injury as severe as that [Shaw broke his leg in September 2015], we've got to handle that with care as well. It's a difficult balance to find but that's where we have to trust our medical teams."

The injuries that saw Smalling and Shaw miss out on United's trip to the Liberty Stadium on Sunday also saw them left out of Southgate's squad against Scotland and Spain.
