Manchester United will have to fork out £15 million ($19 million) if it is to acquire the services of Southampton defender Jose Fonte in January, according to reports.

Jose Mourinho, the Manchester United manager, looked to sign his countryman Fonte from St Mary's in the summer as he was keen to add experience to his defense.

The 32-year-old, who was part of Portugal's victorious Euro 2016 campaign, has 18 months left on his contract at St Mary's.

Mourinho signed 22-year-old Eric Bailly from Villarreal in the summer, with the Ivorian fitting in seamlessly into the United back-four.

With Phil Jones, 24, being Mourinho's other preferred center-back, United's defense lacks experience.

According to the Daily Mail, the Portuguese boss believes he could sign Fonte for £5 million ($6.3 million) but Southampton wants to see that figure trebled.

The transfer window reopens on January 1.
