Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand believes Jose Mourinho has finally found the formula to get the best out of world-record summer-signing Paul Pogba.

Mourinho, who signed the Frenchman in August for £89 million ($109 million), has deployed Pogba alongside Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera in the midfield for Manchester United.

In the past four games, United has won three games and drawn one, gaining momentum in the Premier League, and Ferdinand says Mourinho is getting to know his squad now.

"I do not think Jose knew his best team for a while but in the last few games you have seen him constantly starting the three midfielders of Herrera, Carrick and Pogba," Ferdinand told the club's website.

"I think you have seen a better balance in the midfield, so hopefully we can start motoring on now.

"That has been a problem in the past in terms of working out where the balance is and who the best partnerships and combinations are, and I think he may have found that in those three.

"It frees up Paul, who is a bit more of a maverick, and means he can roam a bit more."

United hosts Sunderland at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, with David Moyes making his return to the club, having been sacked in 2014.

Mourinho then sees former assstant Aitor Karanka travel to the northwest with his Middlesbrough side.
