American figure skater Alysa Liu grew up in Clovis, California, and later moved to Oakland. Her life has largely revolved around skating, which is a key reason she stepped away from the sport at 16.

However, doing it all on her own terms, Liu fell back in love with skating in 2024. Just weeks ago, at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, she claimed two gold medals — including one in the women’s free skate final, a singles event — achieving something no U.S. woman had done in 24 years.

So, what’s life like for Liu after the Olympics? She plans to continue competing throughout the year, but at just 20 years old it seems the gold medalist is taking some time for herself and reassessing other parts of her life, including her schooling and personal pursuits.

Enrolled at UCLA as a physiology major since 2023, Liu has been balancing school around her skating schedule. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, she revealed a notable change in her academic plans.

Liu shared that she is taking a break from school, though her passion for psychology remains. Whether she plans to return has not been disclosed.

“Right now, I’m taking a break from school, but I was always into psychology,” Liu said. “Why do I think the way I do? How can I change my mindset and be more positive about things? — not even ‘positive,’ because, honestly, in life I also love sadness. I love anger. I love to feel all of that. I don’t think the pinnacle of life’s goal is happiness, actually. Maybe just more peaceful thinking.”

She also recently decided to withdraw from the upcoming ISU Figure Skating World Championships later this month in Prague, a competition many expected her to participate in.

Still, Liu plans to compete for much of the next four years, with her sights set on the 2030 Games in France. Her journey is far from over, even if she steps away from the ice for a brief period.
