The Toronto Blue Jays will begin their ALCS campaign without one of their cornerstone players. Shortstop Bo Bichette has been officially left off the roster due to lingering knee issues that have stalled his recovery, dealing a tough blow to the team’s postseason hopes.

Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae was first to report the news via her X account.

"ALCS UPDATE: Bo Bichette will not be on the roster for the #BlueJays. Bichette (knee) was seen to be in some discomfort when he ran the bases for the first time yesterday," she posted.

The Blue Jays later made the information official by posting to X their full roster for the ALCS, with Isiah Kiner-Falefa on the roster instead of Bichette.

Bo Bichette’s Recovery Stalls, Misses ALCS with Blue Jays

...

Bichette hasn’t played since September 6, when he exited a game against the New York Yankees with discomfort in his right knee. Despite initial optimism and a brief return to light baseball activities, the inflammation persisted, preventing him from reaching full mobility in time for the ALCS.

The decision underscores the team’s cautious approach to player health, especially with Bichette’s long-term value in mind. Bichette's aggressive baserunning and sharp defensive instincts have made him a key figure in Toronto’s lineup, batting .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs this season. His absence leaves a noticeable gap both on the field and in the clubhouse.

In his place, Kiner-Falefa is expected to continue serving as shortstop. While not as explosive offensively, the veteran infielder brings postseason experience and reliable defense, which could prove crucial against a high-powered Mariners offense.

With this decision, the Blue Jays will not be able to count on Bichette for the entire ALCS. MLB rules only allow changes to each team's roster due to a player's irretrievable injury. Only in that case could Bichette enter the roster if he is medically fit.

If the Blue Jays advance to the World Series, they will be able to reset their roster. This means that if Bichette's recovery progresses and the medical staff clears him, he could return to play.

For now, Toronto will have to navigate the ALCS without one of its brightest stars. Fans and teammates alike will be hoping Bichette’s rehab takes a positive turn soon, not just for this postseason, but for the future of the franchise.
